I have heard them same thing. Only makes sense because it was the whole reason that the sport pilot license was developed. To make it supposedly easier and cheaper to get into flyin and then work your way up to other licenses and ratings.

There are serious rumblings that this may be fixed when the new rules  come out.  The most recent expected release date for the new rules is  the week of Dec 13th.  Until then, we wait to see.
