You are spot on in your analysis. And the regular FBOS and instructors could care less. Trikes seem to be the exception.

There's a sport pilot training school is California still doing sport pilot training in ELSA Challengers.
The CFI wrote this to me months ago:
"Thanks for inquiring into flight training with me at my flight school. As you may know, the FAA phased out training in experimental aircraft, unless it's the owner's aircraft.

So I charge $125/hr. for a one-hour lesson, but the plane flying is free. That way, the FAA can't say I'm charging for the use of my plane. "

I think he may be on very gray ground but for now he's doing it.

On the other hand, Helen is the exception and is doing a fantastic job at it, LSA wise. It shows what can be done if you have the right attitude. Unfortunately, especially out west, the opposite is true. Even the students don't want to fly anything un-certified during their lessons. Several start-ups have emerged here and failed miserably in the process.

It is weird how attitudes change in different locales. We have many heavy UL's here in the San Joaquin valley and at other scattered locations that have a sizable number of still flying craft. Most of the UL that was heavy and of flat wing type are still flying sporadically and out of site. And most of those never did the cross over to Sport. So even the sport challenge in 2004 didn't produce what was expected, except to try to keep the heavy's out of the air. Out of 17 here locally, I am the only one who sold my UL, N410GT,  purchased a LSA and got the license.

Keep in mind there are other ways to fly Sport Pilot that seem more popular in certain areas.

Anyway, hats off to Helen and hopefully others can and will be able to do the same and get results.
