Well those casual flyers really weren't flying in ultralights as you know. They were flying illegally. Lets always keep that in mind.
I think the attraction in general for the common man went in major part when the USD lost 35% of its buying power compared to other currencies and for the past decade the average man's income against inflation realistically stagnated if not went backwards and the bubbles finally caught up with all of US economy and we basically went into a depression that continues and will take another 5 years to probably truly come out of.
There are plenty of LSAs that are below 100k. We sell one.
Why is that all the guys who complain about LSA prices want to buy the leather seats, golf bag large storage compartment, glass panels, radios and transponders installed, all metal or composite airplanes and then complain about the price comparing them to a Challenger from Canada. Is that what a Challenger is? Nope. Its a bare minimum tube and dacron airplane with a 2 stroke engine with Chinese dial gauges and a belt drive flying at 65 mph.
Paul Mather has a S-LSA like that available why don't you buy his? He hasn't sold many. So why the complains but no actual support or action of people who are offering lower priced airplanes like you are comparing them to (like M-SQuared, CGS Hawk and so on).
You want to buy the Bentley, you are going to pay Bentley prices.
