A combination that seems very appealing to me so far, is a CH650 kit with Corvair power, sort of seems to meet the need for speed and comfort pretty well.

I like the Sonex too, but thought it was a little too tight for 2 big guys. I ended up building a Zodiac, similar to the CH650 that you mentioned.
I used a Jabiru 6-cyl to get a good climb/speed combination. The Corvairs that I have seen have been more of a curiousity that a viable/reliable airplane engine. I know there are folks that love the concept, just like there are VW aficionados. But powerplant teething problems can take an incredible amount of precious time. The Rotax or Jabiru engines have proven to be good lightweight aircraft engines, and have support systems already in place.

At age 72, are you really intersted in building, or flying? As a builder myself, I can certainly understand the need to build your own flying machine, there are few things more satisfying!
But... you can usually find a turn-key airplane for the same or LESS than it would cost you to build one, especially in todays economy where "luxuries" are being sold-off in order to pay for necessities.

Look at http://barnstormers.com/ for some used LSA's, you might be surprised at what's available :) And you can start flying TOMORROW instead of next year sometime... or the next year... etc
