Chris,

IMHO, you are looking at CFI's selfishly voting their opinion to help
preserve their market share. The lower "entry cost" of a SPI is
perceived as a threat to the current CFI's livelihood.

This is, of course, a falsehood as the lower entry cost of sport pilot
will in fact generate more private pilots and up in the long run as
prospective pilots who would never have taken the plunge are lured by
the lower cost of entry, then proceed to get higher ratings.
