It goes in the logbook, and you're not required to carry it. The only
certificates that require you to cdarry your logbook for any purpose are the
sport pilot and CFI-SP, and that only to show the endorsements you've got
for category, class, and set (and the latter is going away). If you have
another form of documentation of the endorsement, you don't need to carry
the logbook. The DPE that did my CFI-SP gave me a wallet-sized card to show
the endorsement, so I don't need to carry my logbook for that purpose.
