Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Rotax engine mechanic training?

Exactly right.
We ask A&P's to first watch videos here before going to do carb sync on a 912 if they have never done it

Most of our customers the last 1.5 years get training from us while picking up the aircraft on how to do an oil change and how to do a carb sync. We do these with them right here once. Then they can do these themselves. Some however, we feel would be better off letting a mechanic do it.

For example, Flight Design states in their CT-LSA Maintenance Manual that Engine removal, installation, and replacement can only be done by a Flight Design USA authorized Service Center.

Rotax (and our FSDO) does want the person who is changing the oil or balancing the carbs on a 912 on an SLSA to have been to Rotax school. What level of mechanic rating if any is required will be specified by the manufacturer of the airframe though and varies by aircraft.
