As I understand it, you can either use the altitude encoding altimeter OR a blind encoder.  The blind encoder is MUCH cheaper!  I believe that if the aircraft has no "engine driven charging system", then the transponder is not required.  I could be wrong, though.

So if you have this, you won't need a altitude encoding altimeter? is that correct? I'm inside of class C airspace, so if i had no battery and charging system i could fly without a transponder? ATC has been kind to me, by allowing me to fly without the transponder. I just don't know, for how long are they going to be kind to me. Thanks, luis.
