JN, a lot of the problem with giving FAR references in this area of aviation is that things are not in teh FARs. They are often in ASTM guidlines, which are harder to access, operating limitations, or legal interpretations. I worked with Rod Machado last summer to write the FAR chapter of his new sport pilot book and even he was amazed at how hard it is to find primary source for the legal stuff with this.
That being said, you have a point that we do all need to try and be diligent to site sources when ever we can.

I've known in the last year or so that I'm likely going to transition to flying with Sport Pilot privileges so for some time I've looked on the net from time to time for a good group that would focus on LSA and SP issues. Something like Cessna Pilots Association (CPA), AOPA Forum, The Purple Board and Pilots of America.
Most of those boards have self-proclaimed and sometimes membership acknowledged knowledge experts. These are people who have "been there and done that" and who can cite references to support their comments and observations. After a while, you get to know these and other personalities and people accord them whatever deference the reader thinks is due. It sorts its self out over time. I don't know those people here, yet, so everyone is both credible and incredible to me. I'll learn over time. Citations help.
I've probably been on this board for a year or longer. I'm not sure I've posted here before - maybe not. In any event, my reading has been spotty because I've used the digest feature through email and find the discussions very difficult to follow because the replies aren't threaded very well that way, at least to me. I've only today found the web presentation where a person can track the thread responses. I'm sure this will improve my appreciation for the group, although I still wish it were in a more "modern" format such as some of the forums cited above. Often, I've hit "delete" when the LSA&SP digest shows up on my email because I didn't know there was an alternative to trying to track the thread development via digest. Maybe the web will be more reader friendly to me.
Perhaps the development of a knowledge base in SP but more especially in LSA is in progress. However, when I read discussions here what I miss are FAR references and quotations that substantiate an assertion. Even third party attribution like "the FSDO told me" aren't as authoritative as one would like because one can't judge the context. Maybe I'll pick this up over time as I follow the discussions more closely. As a person who has a lot to learn, sometimes I fear that I am going to learn from the most voluble and persuasive without knowing they may not be the most accurate. I don't want to learn the equivalent of OWT like "shock cooling" only run ROP and so forth.
I continue to look for a user-friendly, authoritative, reference-based forum to learn more about Sport Pilot and Light Sport Aircraft. As a pilot transitioning from heavier powered airplanes, I am sure I have a different perspective than those who joined LSA through trikes. So, hopefully, I'll pick up some more tips as I learn the people and the forum software better.
My objective at this time is to sell my T210M and buy probably a Jabiru 230. I've been to Shelbyville and have also talked with Jabiru people and many others at Oshkosh, Mt. Vernon and Sebring. In time, I'd like to build a Rans Courier or a Cub knock-off of some kind.
I've also recently taken the 16 hour Repairman Inspection Course through Rainbow Aviation. Some of my discussions with Rotax and Jabiru engine people are interesting in view of what I'm reading here about oil changes and some of the evolving process of who can do what maintenance on what is interesting, as well. It seems to me that in that regard, some people are arguing for their points whether that is the question at hand or not. "Well, I'm right on XXXX specific aspect of the question so I'll address it and not what you brought up." Can be confusing to me.
In summary, I understand exactly why the other party unsubscribed and have been tempted to myself as well. For now, I'll follow this forum as I continue to follow others and we'll simply see where things go over time. I hope to see some of you at LSA events in the next year.
