Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Anybody know anything about Opti-2 oil??

Sweet!  Thanks for the clarification, Mike.  I appreciate your comments.  I just may give it a try when my stash of Castrol is gone.

Thanks, again.

Thanks for your comments, Mike.  So you used to use the Opti-2, but you are using the Pennzoil Air-Cooled now?  What prompted you to change?  It would be nice to carry less oil on my cross countries.  My mower shop buddy showed me that Opti-2 has an injector version available, too.  It is of a lower viscosity.

Thanks, again.

Using Opti-2 at 100:1 is really not any different than running Pennzoil at 50:1.  It is much more concentrated (thicker, if you will) than the standard 50:1 oils, but dilutes just fine in the fuel. It's not a magic formula that allows you to run it at higher ratios.  Also, you will not gain anything by running it at lower ratios.

I'm not selling anything and I don't care if you go with a different oil. Pennzoil Air-Cooled always worked well for me, but so does Opti-2 and after using it for hundreds of hours on a 503 and 582, I think it works pretty good.  Several friends have been using it for years, also.

Like I said, it CANNOT be used in oil-injection since it is formulated to be mixed at 100:1.  If you pre-mix, you are fine.  Other than keeping the engine relatively clean and mixing well with oxygenated fuels, the biggest advantage is that you carry less on X-countries.

Some people sweat the high ratio

I would not put Amsoil in any thing, I have tried it in three engines and all of them up in about one thousand miles. One only had 24,000miles on it it threw a rod and busted a piston. Never again, its no dam good.

Are you saying that you would not recommend using, say, Amsoil at 100:1, if the mfg'r. called out something else at 50:1?  What oil do you use, and at what ratio?

Oils come and go, but what will never change is the oil-to-gas ratio as proscribed by the engine manufacturer.  As long as the oil type is what is recommended, and the oil ratio is what is recommended, you should be free to try what you like.  I've tried a wide variety of oils, but they all meet the minimum requirements and oil ratio per the mfg.  I've not been able to detect much of difference between them, so I tend to look for the best price.

He swears by it, and uses it in his chain saws, blowers, and weedeaters.  It is also recommended for use in snowmobiles, outboards, and personal watercraft.

I was just wondering if anyone here had heard of it, and whether anyone here was using it.  I realize that our aircraft engines are a bit of a different breed, but I am curious just the same.  I currently use Castrol RS TTS, per my engine mfgr's recommendation, but it's getting hard to find.  At 1.2 oz. per gallon, I could reduce my oil costs considerably.  I know there are many options available, but was interested in feedback regarding the Opti-2.

I would appreciate comments, positive or negative, especially those of the constructive variety.

Well I am not really sure if I can agree with you on this statement.  I kind of feel that yes there are people who have all those very high standards in life, and those numbers are growing.  However, it is the media that brings out the worst in society.  You hear very little about the good things people do for each other, and how they care for their brother.  But the media does report every dirty little things going on in the world today.  They over look the good just to find crap that brings down our perspective of humanity.  So yes you have concerns in what you say, but you have not give credit to those who are trying hard to make changes..............

Just my thoughts, sorry if I jumped in this conversation and didn't mean to step on toes.........

How about $90,000 for metal wings, composite fuselage, glass or steam (your choice), leather interior?

Stay tuned.

While I think Richard's statement is a bit strong, I can say that I know
of know pilot who picks up the phone to call the FSDO every time she
sees a fellow pilot violating a rule. Our community is based upon
mutual trust and understanding with a genuine concern for others. I
would suggest that the best way to handle a problem where you see a
fellow pilot violating the rules is to speak with her, discuss the
problem and its implications for safety and the continued well being of
the pilot community. More often that not, this will resolve the problem
in a way that strengthens rather than diminishes us as a whole.

Did you ever get a hod of Rodney at AOPA or the coordinators at this
organization as I previously suggested?

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Compensation as a SP flying an ELSA??

Sometimes laws can have unintentional consequences and when followed to the letter, can be totally stifling which may not have been their original consequence.  Sometimes, simply following the spirit of the law is good enough, and sometimes situations arise that require the law to followed as best as possible but "worked around", a bit.  Sometimes we have to ask ourselves if every battle needs to be fought, if every law has to be followed to the absolute letter.  As an examiner people come to me all the time for help and advice.  I have always felt my role is to help people become legal if they want to be and help them be safer pilots if they could use the help.  My role is not to be a Barney Fife.  Sometimes doers of good deeds could use a break when the laws are written such that if followed exactly, good deeds won't get done.

Sorry but I am tired of the man using the same old excuse to speed his pregnant wife to the hospital year after year.

The FAA can choose to escort if they so feel.

Meso,

You are so wrong.

A trivial example.

A husband is doing the good deed of rushing his wife to the hospital when she is
having a baby. At such times, the speed limit is often exceeded and any fuzz ,
upon learning of the impending baby will escort them, siren wailing.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Anybody know anything about Opti-2 oil??

Group,

At the risk of starting up the old oil debate….  I was at my local lawnmower parts establishment yesterday.  It is owned by a pilot friend of mine who is quite knowledgeable about engines of all types.  We got on the subject of two-cycle oil and he introduced me to an oil called Opti-2.  It is supposedly a new type of formulation, requiring only 1.2 ounces per gallon for any two-stroke engine, regardless of make or mix ratio.  It has an ISO rating of EG-D++ which is the highest rating available.  You can check it out at  www.opti2-4.com .
