Thank you all for your responses, especially you Helen, because the plane which was the focus of my conversations at the FBO was a Sportcruiser which is for sale. My colleagues don't like it either. I'm thinking the high-wing crafts *might* display more stable characteristics but it probably depends on the individual manufacturer.
A Diamond DA-20 C1 would seem to hold up well in mild turbulence. One pilot tells me that it out-flys a C-172.
