Well, first, the plane has to meet all the limitations of a LSA plane.

If the plane is already a SLSA, from the manufacture, then it is quite easy,
fill out the registration form, remove pink sheet from multi sheet form, send in
the form with $5. Eventually, the FAA if send you a registration form with your
'N' number.
Put 'N' number on your plane.
take pink slip from form, fill out the program letter, the W&B form, etc,
contact a DAR to determine exactly what other paper work will be necessary, like
your personal identification.
give DAR paperwork and ~$350$.
DAR performs the airworthiness inspection,
DAR fills out airworthiness certificate
DAR fills out Phase 1 and Phase II paperwork
DAR goes over all paperwork with you, especially the Phase I and Phase II.
Your done.

if the plane is already a ELSA, the steps are almost exactly the same.

If the plane has ever been registered anywhere then you cannot register it as an
LSA plane.

However, if the plane is neither SLSA nor ELSA nor standard category, you have a
nice lawn ornament.

You MAY be able to convert the plane to the experimental A/B or experimental
exhibition category, but it will be a problem all around.

If the plane meets the part-103 limitations, then you do not need, nor can you
get, a 'N' number, etc.
