I think that depends completely on the airplane. We briefly had a Sport Cruiser on the line. That thing bounced all over the place in any sort of turbulence, cooked the ocupants, and leaked like a sieve in rain. It also ran out of rudder a round 9kts of crosswind. Needless to say that it wouldn't be my first choice for a cross country plane.
We later added a Tecnam P92 to the line and found it quite the opposite. It was more stable than a C150, cool in the summer, and dry in the rain. It's only draw back for trips is a small baggage area. Oh, and we've flight tested our P92s and found they can handle crosswinds up to 24kts. That's much better than my C172.
Bottom line is that there are as many different flight characteristics as there are LSAs. You just have to test fly them and put them through their paces.

Seriously, is the wing loading too light to use an LSA for travel? I like the Technam Sierra, Czech Sportcruiser, FK Polaris, or Arion Lightning style crafts. The instructors I deal with don't like LSAs much because they're "extremely touchy" or "aren't much use on windy days" or "are very unforgiving". They tell me LSA will "beat you to death". So...are they impractical to rely on for travel?
