It's not a matter of where the wing is but how it is designed.  The low wing Tecnam Sierra is also very stable and enjoyable for cross country.  You just need to test fly anything you are looking at on a bumpy day and see how it does.

Oh, and DA-20s are nice *if* you can stand the seats.

A Diamond DA-20 C1 would seem to hold up well in mild turbulence. One pilot tells me that it out-flys a C-172.
