This is the way it was explained to me (by the FSDO):

If you go up* and take a picture of your neighbors barn, and later he sees it and wants to pay you $25 for it, that's legal.

If the neighbor says, "Here's $25, go take a picture of my barn from the air," that is NOT legal.

The main problem you have as a sport pilot, is being compensated, and potentially the "furtherance of a business" (14 CFR 61.315)
