systems required for IFR. The engine has little to do with their IFR
decision beyond the weight issue. Remember, the O200 is the same engine
in the C150 and the 4 cylinder version of the same engine in the early
C172, the O300, both IFR legal.. It's a fine engine for IFR as long as
you remember carb heat when you go actual. It's just heavy. Cessna is
already planning to be night legal.
As for Piper, from what I gathered at OSH, the same old company is still
putting out the Sport Cruiser and Piper has little to do with it other
than renaming it and taking a cut on the profit. Given such, I wouldn't
hold your breath for an American engine. Depending upon how heavy this
new Lycoming is, I also suspect the Piper would not meet ASTM
requirements for such with an American engine since 430lbs is required
as a minimum useful load.
Speaking of IFR, did you all hear that ASTM is trying to ban IMC for
LSAs? Those already out there would be grandfathered but new ones would
be placarded against this if their proposal passes. I for one see this
as a huge step in the wrong direction as it makes the $130K LSA even
less useful to a flight school than the $25K C150 or $80K C172. If we
are to grow the LSA movement we need to bring more flight schools on
board and this isn't going to help.
