Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: perfect for my situation

85K I can buy a lot more than a 32 year old 172. Like an RV8 or a 2000 Citabria.

Yes, new prices are insane... But not many can afford an 80k dollar toy.

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Wingtip winglets for improved performance? Any info?

on the quick silver we call them air dams we just screw a piece of lexan to the wing tip after heating it up and putting a crease in the upper side for strength. total cost under $5 or you can buy them from air tech for allot moor.

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Wingtip winglets for improved performance? Any info?

"Wingtip devices increase the lift generated at the wingtip (by smoothing the airflow across the upper wing near the tip) and reduce the lift-induced drag caused by wingtip vortices, improving lift-to-drag ratio. This increases fuel efficiency in powered aircraft and increases cross-country speed in gliders, in both cases increasing range.[1] U.S. Air Force studies indicate that a given improvement in fuel efficiency correlates directly with the causal increase in the aircraft's lift-to-drag ratio.[2]"

These are the vertical upward fins sometimes seen on the ends of wings commercial aircraft.
I've seen downward tips put on Piper Tripacers, which would seem to accomplish the same thing (inhibit the generation of wingtip vortices thus reducing drag.)

They are a somewhat unique modes in this respect:
Many modifications seem to have tradeoffs (bush tires: Better rough field landings, but some increased drag. Shorter wings, more speed but less climb rate, Etc.)
These (ignoring initial cost and possible complexity of installation) seem to give more speed and better fuel consumption without any real downside.

Anyone know of these one LSAs?

Know of any thought that's ever been given to this possibility?

Curious,
Alex

I am a dealer for Pipistrel and have flown every model but the electric launch Taurus and the new Alpha trainer. Every model I have flown has hit the performance numbers that Pipistrel claims for it. They do what the factory says they will do. I am proud to be a dealer, they are fantastic aircraft.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Fuel Burn

Yes "low - er" drag but not by too much at those low speeds. Depends on at what speed does the aircraft switch over the drag profile from induced to parasitic. There your induced drag rules and larger aspect ratio, proper winglets, wing fences or anything that reduces tip vortices or boundary layer separation would be just as useful if not more.

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Pipistrel ALPHA Trainer fuel flow

guys, I'm really starting to become worried about the ongoing communication and the fact that nobody ever bothers to look at the information presented.

Please allow me to spell it out for you directly from the manual and give you an explanation on fuel consumption.

fuel flow at cruise speed 108 knots 3.6 US gph (13.6 l/h)
fuel flow in circuits 2.5g US gph (9.5 l/h)

These details are clearly listed on the website and in the information pack and in the flight manual and a real figures. The fuel flow in circuits based on my experience is closer to 8.5 litres per hour instead of 9.5 litres per hour. It must be remembered that the Pipistrel ALPHA Trainer is extremely clean, it has no wing struts, no rivets nothing else in the air stream which can slow the aircraft down by creating drag. This design is based on a glider and pretty much the whole circuit from mid downwind is performed with the engine at idle so even though you are using full power for take off and climb to 1000 feet AGL the moment you are on mid downwind the rest of the circuit is with the engine at idle, with the engine at idle and at neutral flap the aircraft has a glide ratio of around 20 to 1 so it is easy to see that the aircraft can achieve and does achieve the quoted fuel flow figures.

Can we now please put this issue to bed.... many thanks Michael

You can't cruse a 747 at 70 MPH but it works good with a Luscomb and low fuel burn so I think you could 2.5 GPH with a rotex. And don't forget that lainar flow wing it will have much lower drag.

The only way to get any Aircraft engine to burn 2.5 GPH at cruise,
is to select a cruise speed at which 2.5 GPH is burned.

Yes... looks right to me. ;-)

Mike

PS:
I'm starting to think the expression "cruise speed" could be vague.
Also the expressions "normal" and "average" and "low RPM" and "low speed" and "Rotax".

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: perfect for my situation

Hi Ron,
Sure you can buy a 1979 C172 for that or less also.
You know why because its 32 years old.
We got to keep context. You can't try and compare that C172 to new aircraft. We need to compare apples to apples. Today the manufacturers have to deal with today's costs, labor, liability.

Done.  I've already asked everyone once to move this discussion in a positive direction.

Time to end this thread folks.  Anyone who does not will also be moved to moderated status.

Wow. The poor guy mentions the Cafe Foundation and you are asking for links. There is such a thing called Google and web search and for goodness sakes, if you are flying, how come you are oblivious to Cafe Foundation and NASA challenge. Where have you been :)?

I completely believe that they 2.5 GPH fuel burn in the pattern. Apollo Fox has 2.5 GPH at 65 to 70 knots in the pattern and its a whole lot more draggy than this plane. It doesn't even have struts. Pipestrel makes sailplanes or motor gliders. They reduce the induce drag by increasing the aspect ratio and this plane is a derivative of one of their models so highly likely it has a lower aspect ratio but still the rest of the heritage is there from their motor glider.
