Bruce,
Anecdotal evidence is not really going to make a case.
I have trained an ATP to transition to trikes in as little as 7 hours but in general that is the worse kind of student for trikes and takes longer than the usual guy off the street.
In the ATP world Sims will make a ton of sense. The flying is different. In trikes and lighter aircraft, those guys are generally more lost and do not find their feel till later.
An analysis of European accident stats to 2006 show very clearly that in microlight category the biggest accident statistic was experienced pilots on calm evening clear days but with low time in "type". Time in type made a much bigger difference than simply "time".
That report is still available somewhere on the web.

Clearly, I am advocating both for any kind of flying, including Sport Pilot. To me it is very simple, if you take a willing victim and train him to Sport Pilot standards in say, 30 hours, will he be a better pilot if in that 30 hours is interspersed with 10 hours of additional sim time. In my view the answer is, absolutely.

I don't know how many sim hours he had, but without the sim experience it would have taken him a lot more time. So, Helen, there is your answer - they are not using deposits and refund refusals to fund other students.

And at less than half the cost of some LSAs a Redbird full motion sim should be part of the arsenal at every flight school. It's the way of the future...
