Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Sport Pilot training costs - My recent experience

Dallas,

I've been training at First Landings Aviation out of Apopka, FL (X04). If you like crosswind training this is the airport to go to!

Seriously, it's a nice small school -- they do both SPL and PPL. You primarily stay with the same instructor -- I stayed with the same guy until the end, when I did mock check rides with the other guys. That was super useful technique wise and helped to get me through the fear of the examiner. Their fleet is 3 LSAs (2 Pipers and a Remos) and a Cherokee.

On the iPad question, these are the iPad apps I use:

ForeFlight Mobile - the is the best app I've found for planning/filing/etc. Works for both iPad and iPhone with the proper display format for each (unlike the recent AOPA FlyQ offering). Uses CSC Duats for filing.

RadarScope - I like this radar display program over others, because if you have an Allison House data subscription it will display the terminal weather radars (like at MCO) as well as lightning strike info. RadarScope has a Mac/PC version as well that will use the same data feeds. I live in FL so thunderstorms are a big part of planning (for almost any activity).

FlightScale - weight and balance, let's you enter custom CG envelop data for visual CG range check.

LiveATC - I listen to this on the way to/from work a lot. It really helped me for my class D endorsement.

Sporty's Study Buddy (PPL) - no SPL version, but the PPL version worked fine for SPL studying.

AOPA Mags - so I can read about flying when weather is too bad to fly

Apps I DON'T like/use:

DTC DUAT - iPhone format only and makes you enter login info each time

AOPA FlyQ - iPhone format only

ForeFlight Checklist Pro - expensive and iPhone only format. I'd honestly rather use a laminated checklist.
